Sejarah NIKE

Nike, awalnya dikenal sebagai Blue Ribbon Sports, didirikan oleh atlet trek Philip Knight dan pelatihnya, Bill Bowerman dari University of Oregon pada Januari 1964. Awalnya perusahaan beroperasi sebagai distributor untuk pembuat sepatu Jepang Onitsuka Tiger.

Laba perusahaan tumbuh dengan cepat, dan pada tahun 1966, BRS membuka toko ritel pertama, terletak di Pico Boulevard di Santa Monica, California. Pada 1971, hubungan antara BRS dan Onitsuka Tiger sudah mendekati akhir, dan BRS siap untuk memulai perusahaan alas kaki sendiri. Sepatu pertama yang dijual kepada publik adalah sepatu sepak bola bernama "Nike", yang dirilis pada musim panas 1971.

Meski Michael Jordan itu terkenal, ia bukan pilihan pertama Phil Knight. Nike sedang berusaha untuk mendapatkan Larry Bird dan Magic Johnson, 2 dari atlet yang paling populer pada saat itu.

Pada tahun 1980, Nike telah mencapai 50% pangsa pasar di Amerika Serikat pasar sepatu atletik, dan perusahaan go public pada bulan Desember tahun itu. Pertumbuhannya adalah karena sebagian besar untuk iklan 'word-of-foot' (mengutip sebuah iklan cetak Nike dari akhir 1970-an), daripada iklan televisi. Iklan televisi nasional pertama Nike berlangsung pada bulan Oktober 1982 selama siaran dari New York Marathon.
